We The People: This Day in History, October 25
The State Fair of Texas opens
DALLAS, Texas (KWTX) - On October 25, 1886, the Texas State Fair opened on a section of farm in North Dallas.
A rival organization, the Dallas Exposition, opened its first fair the following day.
Both fairs were successful and, together, drew over 35,000 people a day.
Eventually, the two groups decided to merge into what eventually became the State Fair of Texas.
The traditional fair season was extended from 17 to 24 days, and corporate sponsorship began to play an increasingly important role in programming.
As a celebration of Texas heritage, the state fair aims to embody all aspects of Lone Star culture through promoting agriculture, education, and community through entertainment in a family-friendly environment.
