Texas Private Schools begin process to join education savings accounts, furthering school choice
WACO, Texas (KWTX) - The new Texas Education Freedom Accounts will give parents funding that can go to private school tuition for their kids, but private schools need to submit an application to be officially apart of the new system.
Schools must show that they are in line with the TEA’s requirements, located in Texas and have been operational for more than two years.
Each child is expected to receive around ten thousand dollars.
In Killeen, since the Oak Creek Academy’s application was approved by the state, founder Dr. Tracy Hanson says they are expecting more families to be interested in their school.
“Our tuition is almost ten thousand dollars a school year, and these funds will fulfil the tuition amount that we charge for students,” Dr. Hanson said.
In Waco, Bishop Louis Reicher filled out an application to verify their credentials with the state.
Head of schools Dr. Michael Pennell says they have even worked with other schools under their diocese to make sure they are all on the same page.
“We want to make sure those details are really buttoned up, because while families are looking at our mission and we think and hope that we can connect with those families, we also want to meet their expectations of having the best education for their children,” Dr. Pennell said.
The online application for parents to receive funding will be open on February 4 on the Texas Education Freedom Account’s website.
