POLK COUNTY, Texas (KWTX) - On October 29, 1853, an Alabama tribal chief and citizens of Polk County, Texas, presented a petition to the state legislature requesting land for a reservation.

As a thank you to the tribes for their support in the Texas Revolution, the petition was approved.

The state then purchased more than 1,100 acres for the Alabama Indian Reservation.

About 500 tribe members settled on this land that winter.
