Harker Heights, Texas, Christian school raising money for third grader battling cancer
Grade level that raises the most money will get to shave the head of school administrator
HARKER HEIGHTS, Texas (KWTX) - Jazmyne Guillen is a third-grader at Vintage Christian Academy, located at 171 Farm-To-Market 3219 in Harker Heights.
She loves to dress up, the color pink and drawing.
You wouldn’t know it by looking at her vibrant exterior but inside she is taking on a cancer fight for the second time.
She is longing for a transplant but it’s not possible with the cancer being in her blood.
To help Jazmyne’s family, her school is holding a fundraiser and the incentive for those who raise the most is all the buzz.
Jazmyne Guillen was first diagnosed with Leukemia at 15 months old and again at seven years old. Now, at nine years old, her best hope is a bone marrow transplant.
But weeks before that surgery was supposed to happen, Leukemia was found in her blood after running tests.
She is back on chemo and the family is waiting and hoping the chemotherapy gets her back into remission so they can move forward with the transplant.
Until then, the family is hospital bound and the bills continue to pile up. Their church community and Jazmyne’s school are hoping to ease that burden.
“I wanted to do something that interacted with our students directly and it has been so beautiful seeing these kids bring in their piggy banks,” says Robert “Coach” Bacon, the Head of Schools at Vintage Christian Academy.
Coach Bacon started the ‘Great Warrior Buzz Off’ where each grade is trying to raise the most money for Jazmyne. The winning grade gets to shave Coach Bacon’s head.
“To be able to say ‘hey, if our class does this then we will be able to put the buzzers to the head of schools’ and they’ve really jumped on it,” Bacon explains.
He says nearly $4,000 has been raised and the most so far has been raised by the third graders, Jazmyn’s very own classmates.
“I’m talking like water gallon jugs full of coins,” Coach Bacon says as he explains students’ morning routine since starting the competition.
From pennies to prayer, Jazmyne and her family have been surrounded by support.
If you would like to help donate to Jazmyne and her fight, there are a few ways to do so.
