More than 1,000 families receive food from distribution at Killeen, Texas mall
Cars wrapped around the mall’s exterior hours before donation drive opened
KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) - 1,078 families have food on the table tonight after the Central Texas Food Bank brought a food distribution to the Killeen Mall amid the support needed for communities during the government shutdown.
The food distribution started at 4:30 but the line started to form as early as 1:30 pm and began to circle the exterior of the mall.
“It has been a consistent theme for the last few weeks as the shut down has gone on, we’re seeing more and more people attending these distributions and getting there sooner to line up,” says Beth Corbett who is the Vice President of Government Affairs and Advocacy for the food bank.
Bell County is one of 21 counties served by CTFB. “This is actually the county that has the highest rate of food insecurity,” Corbett explains.
She says of all the people they serve, many of them have connections to Fort Hood. “About half of those are enlisted personnel or affiliated with the post here in Killeen.”
Dozens of volunteers kept this well-oiled machine moving and while some of them came from Austin to help, others are helping their neighbors.
“Contributing back to the Fort Hood community is very, very important to me as well as the community itself so that’s my favorite part, being able to give back and serve my community,” says volunteer Stacey Wilson.
Wilson has seen the unfortunate effects of the shutdown and she says watching her community in the midst of crisis gives her hope.
