BELL CO., Texas (KWTX) - Bell County Commissioner Louie Minor (D) filed a complaint challenging the new district map passed by legislators.

The complaint is an addition to a LULAC lawsuit filed in 2021 challenging the redistricting map passed in 2020.

The new complaint alleges that President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice wrote a letter asking Texas to redraw districts to give them a single-race majority. Commissioner Minor said he had not seen the letter.

“Donald Trump wanted to gerrymander Texas to try and squeeze five more seats out of the state,” Minor said.

McLennan County Republican Party Chair Chris DeCluitt said the new districts were legal.

“All the Republican lawmakers are doing is bringing together communities of interest,” DeCluitt said. “And reflecting the voting patterns of the state.”

The 2021 lawsuit was heard over the summer but has yet to receive a ruling. Minor said it could be years before a ruling is made.
