WACO, Texas (KWTX) - Bishop Louis Reicher Catholic School cancelled school on Monday after the school was broken into and vandalized overnight.

Faculty discovered furniture turned over and fire extinguisher discharged around the school’s gym and surrounding rooms.

Students at the high school building were sent home to give staff time to clean and the Waco Police Department time to investigate.

Head of Bishop Reicher, Dr. Michael Pennell, said the damage could have been worse.

“The best we can tell this took place in the middle of the night when we weren’t here,” Dr. Pennell said. “It was only discovered when we arrived this morning.”

He said the vandals only caused mild mischief.

“When I saw the basketballs lying around on the gym floor it gives me the idea that they were maybe shooting hoops in here which is kinda crazy,” Dr. Pennell said. “I don’t know if that’s the case or not. But we’re just trying to understand what was going on ourselves.”

Students will return to school on Wednesday.

“I anticipate the kids are having a great day and they’re really taking advantage of the fact that they’re off of school for one day,” Dr. Pennell said.

Dr. Pennell said the police informed him that the investigation should conclude within 48 hours.
