We The People: This Day in History, October 27
President and Texas lover Theodore Roosevelt was born
WACO, Texas (KWTX) - On October 27, 1858, Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States, was born in New York City.
While you might not immediately connect him with the Lone Star State, Teddy Roosevelt developed some deep ties to Texas.
Roosevelt experienced Texas firsthand in 1892, hunting in the Hill Country and fondly recalling its wilderness.
But his most famous Texas connection came in 1898 when he returned to the Menger Hotel in San Antonio to recruit his legendary “Rough Riders” for the Spanish-American War.
It’s also where he got his horse “Little Texas”, whom he rode into battle.
Roosevelt’s final visit in 1905 brought him back to San Antonio, where he famously declared, “I remember well, of riding in here one day to see the Alamo and going away feeling that, come what would, I was going to try and handle myself so that no disgrace should come to the memory of the Americans who died there.”
