Dog found injured on Interstate 35 recovering after rescue by local police chief
BRUCEVILLE-EDDY, Texas (KWTX) - An 8-year-old dog named Lincoln is now recovering after being found lying in the grass along I-35 in Bruceville-Eddy earlier this month.
Just after 11 a.m. on Nov. 8 a driver spotted the dog and called the Bruceville-Eddy Police Department, Chief Michael Dorsey responding to the call.
“They saw a dog that was laying in the grass median between the interstate meeting the frontage road, and so were basically concerned for the dogs welfare,” Dorsey recalled.
Dorsey’s body camera footage shows him approaching the dog, trying to get him to move away from the highway before ultimately going to him and putting on a leash.
“He didn’t want to move and so at that point I understood he had some cuts and things wrong with his legs,” Dorsey said.
He then picked up the dog and carried him to his patrol car so he could take him back to the station.
There they checked him for a microchip and found one that traced back to Lucky Lab Rescue, where Lincoln was adopted from 8 years ago as a puppy.
“We let them know the situation and they had whoever’s part of their rescue come out and pick him up, and they actually took him to a vet in Austin,” Dorsey shared.
Once at the vet they learned Lincoln had a broken hip with the other dislocated, a strained ligament in his front paw, and several pelvic fractures. Volunteer Emmy VanderMeer said the injuries are likely from being hit by a car.
“We’re not sure whether he was hit on the access road or on 35, but definitely his injuries indicate he was hit by a car,” VanderMeer explained.
But just two weeks later Lincoln is doing much better, recovering at a veterinary clinic just north of Austin.
“Dr. Allman’s clinic is a surgical clinic, so here he can convalesce and build up his strength and hopefully start walking again,” VanderMeer shared.
As for how Lincoln ended up on the side of a highway, Dorsey says they believe they have found Lincoln’s owner and are actively investigating.
“Hopefully we can put all the pieces together and fully understand what happened,” Dorsey said, “if there is something, you know a criminal aspect to it, then we’re definitely going to pursue that”.
So far Lincoln has had one hip replaced, with one more surgery needed to replace the other one before he can walk and start his rehabilitation journey.
Lucky Lab Rescue says they are still working to find money for the surgery, which is about $15,000. If you would like to help the link to donate can be found here.
