KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) - With lawmakers on Capital Hill appearing to be at an impasse, the possibility of a Government shutdown grows larger.

Veterans like Willie Keller have already experienced multiple shutdowns during their years in service.

“It was struggling for some,” said Willie Keller, Commander of VFW Post 12209, located on Fort Hood. “Some of us had savings and still ate at the mess hall, things like that. It affected a lot of people, but as it dragged on a little further, it did affect us.”

That is because a shutdown would effectively stop paychecks for federal employees and service members.

That is why many are welcoming the news that the Army Air Force Exchange Service will remain open during a shutdown, a great help to soldiers and families on post.

“Yeah it does help out for soldiers not havening a lot of money ore getting paid much,” said Keller. “We sit at the PX and just talk to them sometimes. A place where they can go eat. You may eat at the Warrior restaurants, or some may want to go to the PX and have a bite to eat.”

AAFES operates several locations from convenience stores and malls to food courts located on military installations around the world.

This can help but being prepared is just as important as stores not closing.

“Trust your leadership,” said Keller. “Ask those questions because they’re going to experience it as well. It’s not because of their rank that they’re not going to get paid, yours will be the same way. Just have a conversation with your leadership. Trust your leadership.”

While AAFES staying open during a shutdown will help a little but it won’t make much of a difference if a shutdown lasts weeks or even months.
