‘I was shocked’: Law Firm representing victims of former Fort Hood OB-GYN says the case is exposing systemic medical malpractice in the Army
FORT HOOD, Texas (KWTX) - The Houston based Cobos Law Firm is suing Dr. McGraw on behalf of now 55 former patients of his that say he did everything from filming them without consent to inappropriate touching and unnecessary procedures.
That number is up from the 16 or so clients they announced at a recent press conference they held at the gates of Fort Hood.
“Victims who have come forward, raised their hand, and said me too,” said Andrew Cobos, lead attorney with Cobos Law Firm. “This really is a “Me Too” moment involving Army medical practices. Lots of women were involved because they were patients of Dr. McGraw and they were mistreated by Dr. McGraw.”
The list now includes a client seen by McGraw while he was stationed in Hawaii at Tripler Army Medical Center and the phones keep ringing.
They are even getting calls they say have nothing to do with this case but are bringing a larger issue to light.
“Others are calling from installations all around the United States and they’re saying, “I was subject to what I consider to be harassment at my hospital, with my OB-GYN.” said Cobos. “It kind of took me by surprise, how expansive the complaints are about Army medical care.”
The Cobos Law firm has filed a civil lawsuit in Bell County but it is not the only one they are planning for.
“We are preparing Federal Tort Claims Act cases to be filed against the Army and right now we are preparing those cases to be filed,” said Cobos.
They may also have to file a separate case for their client in Hawaii because of jurisdiction.
They say this case has only shed light on systemic medical malpractice across the Army.
“I don’t know that I understood the sheer magnitude of the problem but hopefully it’s something that Congress and the Pentagon will look into and address,” said Cobos.
We have also been able to confirm with Fort Hood officials that over 1,400 letters have been sent by Army CID to potential victims of Dr. McGraw and his access to Army medical facilities and digital portals was revoked withing hours of the allegations being made.
Fort Hood officials have also confirmed that no formal charges have been brought against Dr. McGraw at this point but more information on this case will be released soon.
