KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) - The Killeen City Council is considering changing their election day to November of odd numbered years only and getting rid of their May elections.

Governor Abbatt signed Senate Bill 1494 earlier this year allowing cities to chang the day they hole elections to November.

According to City Council members, voters informed them that they had until the end of the year to decide whether or not they want to make the change.

“A bunch of citizens notified the Council that this was there because we were not tracking it,” said Riakos Adams, Mayor Pro Tem and City Council Member at Large, Killeen. “I subscribe to Legistar and I didn’t see it pop up. I try to catch up on all the Bills and this one just went by me.”

This would get rid of May elections and hold elections in November of odd numbered years.

“Now the question comes up whether you conduct elections still in May of 2026,” said Adams. “You have your Mayor and at large seats coming open.”

If they don’t hold next mays elections, it would push the Mayor and at large election November of 2027 and extend those current terms by 18-months.

Council member Jose Segarra says they have another option that would allow the change but keep next May’s election.

“We can decide to just move to November but postpose it to 2029,”said Segarra. “Which I think would be the more better option because there’s a lot more things that we have to plan out. We need that time to plan out.”

Changing from staggard elections to a single election in November of odd number years is something Mayor Pro Tem Riakos Adams agrees with.

“I think we should move it because we have a larger voter turnout and we always talk about having more people engaged in the process so that you can vote for the people that you want in office,” said Adams.

They only have until December 31st of 2025 to make the change if they choose to.

They said they are holding the meeting this Friday to meet that deadline and not interfere with holiday plans members have already made.
