“They need our help right now. They need our thoughts and prayers:” Baylor Volunteers Step Up for Kerr County
WACO, Texas (KWTX) - Kerr County residents will be in recovery and cleanup mode for a while.
Baylor University and BearAid disaster relief are among the many groups stepping in to help with the healing process.
Volunteers packed 200 buckets with essential items to help prevent mold from growing in homes affected by floodwaters.
One bucket at a time, they’re turning compassion into action, filling them with basics Kerr County flood survivors will need.
Incoming Baylor freshman Leiss Phelps said his heart goes out to the victims.
“It’s very sad that that happened to so many people, like with Camp Mystic and the whole community down there,” Phelps said.
He traveled from North Texas with his parents, Chris and Becky Phelps, to the Bobo Spiritual Life Center in Waco to volunteer.
It’s something Phelps said was instilled in him early on.
“I’ve tried to volunteer as much as I could over the past few years of high school. I’d love to continue that while I’m here at Baylor. So this just seemed like an easy decision to come help. They need our help right now. They need our thoughts and prayers,” he said.
From tearing off plastic to stacking supplies, volunteers got straight to work filling nearly 200 buckets.
Baylor Spiritual Life Senior Service Coordinator Sarah Walker said these small items can make a big difference.
“One big issue after a flood is mold and mildew. You want to get all the wet stuff out as quickly as possible and try to stop that growth,” Walker said.
With every bucket packed, volunteers are sending more than just supplies. They’re sending strength and solidarity to those picking up the pieces.
“We started getting emails, messages, everyone reaching out asking how they could help. I love to see that. People have been so responsive and given their time, money, and energy to help our neighbors,” said Walker.
Organizers plan to send the supplies to Kerr County Friday. Baylor will also host a prayer service for Central Texas flood victims Thursday at Elliston Chapel.
