GROESBECK, Texas (KWTX) - Groesbeck ISD is investigating the high school after students made racist remarks and death threats over social media.

A mother said this happened on Friday when her daughter made a comment about the high school football team. She is now pulling her tenth grader out of the district.

The mother told News 10 her child did not go to school Monday because students threatened to hang her in a group message. She said she is disappointed because more than 20 people were in that group message, adding racism is learned at home.

Student commented on football team

Carlene Henderson, a Groesbeck ISD parent, said over the weekend her daughter gave her opinion about the football team on social media.

“She made the comment that the football team sucked, she wasn’t lying,” Henderson said.

Henderson said several players from the team then placed her 10th grader in a group message over Snapchat, where she was met with racist insults.

“It’s one thing to bully somebody but to bully them and calling them the N word, coons, fat shaming her and talking about hanging her from a tree? No, that’s not cool and it’s unacceptable,” Henderson said.

Parent cites ongoing issues with district

Henderson said her child no longer feels safe at school and does not want to attend, especially since she said Groesbeck ISD has a history of racist behavior and an ongoing bullying issue.

“Yall are really like this for real, people have been saying this for years. Everything is swept under the rug in Groesbeck. They don’t want Groesbeck to look bad, they have an image to keep up but I don’t care,” Henderson said.

The mother said parents must protect their children while also educating them that racism does not move the community forward.

“Nobody is going to protect them like you’re going to protect them. And if you turn a blind eye to something like this, you’re just as ignorant as the person who made those comments,” Henderson said.

Groesbeck ISD said, “The safety and well-being of all students and staff remain our highest priority. Groesbeck ISD does not condone any behavior that may be considered harmful or detrimental to our students, staff, or community members.

Groesbeck ISD administration immediately began a thorough investigation to identify those involved and to determine when and where the incident occurred. School personnel continue to investigate whether additional students may have violated the Groesbeck ISD Student Code of Conduct. If any violations are confirmed, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with district policy.

We want to reassure our community that the safety of our students and staff is of utmost importance at Groesbeck ISD. The district remains committed to being proactive and transparent, while also respecting the privacy rights of all students as required by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)."

Groesbeck Police Department could not provide information about the incident.
