District 7-2A Executive Committee rules Axtell High football team eligible for postseason

AXTELL, Texas (KWTX) - UPDATE: The District 7-2A Executive Committee has ruled the Axtell football team eligible for postseason play for the 2025 season.

The DEC met on Friday morning to discuss allegations of violating district residency policy via the use of an ineligible player. The district committee found Axtell met all requirements regarding the transfer status of one of their players.

The Longhorns are currently 6-1 and at the top of the District 7-2A I standings with a 3-0 record.

Axtell is idle in Week 9 of the high school football season and will take the field next on October 31 at Bosqueville at 7 p.m.

The District 7-2A Executive Committee plans to meet on Friday, October 24 to consider potential action concerning allegations claiming the Axtell football team has been using an ineligible player.

According to a meeting agenda posted on the Axtell ISD website, the DEC will meet to discuss “possible action concerning items related to allegations of student resident violations and subsequent eligibility.”

The Longhorns currently sit at the top of the District 7-2A I standings with a 3-0 record in district play, 6-1 overall.

According to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, the Longhorns are the 9th best team in the Texas 2A state rankings.

The meeting will take place just a few months after District 7-2A rival Rio Vista was ruled ineligible for the 2025 postseason due to recruiting and residency violations.

The Rio Vista Eagles are currently second in the district standings behind Axtell.
