WACO, Texas (KWTX) - On August 9th, 1974, Gerald Ford was sworn in as the 38th president of the United States.

It followed Richard Nixon’s resignation in the wake of the Watergate scandal.

Ford took the oath of office in the East Room of the white house before speaking to the nation in a television address.

He declared, “My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over.”

Ford was the first president to be appointed, rather than elected, to the presidential office
