ROBINSON, Texas (KWTX) - A local high school football player is home recovering but is suffering from slurred speech and will be confined to a dark room for a week after a head injury sent him to the hospital by ambulance.

Trevor Gerik, 15, a middle linebacker for Robinson’s junior varsity team, suffered the injury right after halftime as the Rockets took on the Gatesville Hornets in Gatesville.

The scary scene led officials to immediately cancel the game as players from both teams circled up together on the field to pray.

“It was terrifying, but I had to be strong because everyone around me was freaking out,” Trevor’s mom, Lee Ann Kirkpatrick told KWTX.

Lee Ann said the injury happened just after halftime when Trevor collided helmet to helmet with a player on Gatesville’s team.

She said Trevor stood up briefly before falling back to the ground and “going out cold.”

Gerik was taken by ambulance to McLane Children’s Hospital in Temple where the sophomore was diagnosed with a severe concussion, but his mom says it could have been a lot worse.

According to doctors, Gerik’s CT scans were clear.

“The neurologist said he’s very lucky,” Lee Ann said.

Trevor is home Friday morning resting.   Lee Ann said he’ll have to avoid screens and as much light as possible for the next week.

While his speech is impaired, doctors say they expect that to improve in the coming days.

Lee Ann says she wants to thank both the Gatesville and Robinson community for their outpouring of love and support, adding that the Robinson coaching staff were all at the hospital at McLane’s to make sure her son was okay.

“The Gatesville nurse on the field was amazing,” Lee Ann said.  “The stands and parents were absolutely amazing. The prayers, the calls, the texts --Robinson is such an amazing community.”

Gatesville is also sending a care package to Trevor’s home today.

Lee Ann says Trevor hopes to recover and be back on the field doing what he loves with his friends as soon as possible.
