Food for Families: Food Care Center in Killeen served nearly 150k families last year, in need of record-number of donations this year
KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) - Food Care Center in Killeen is serving more than 20,000 more families this year, and, because of changes with suppliers, the pantry is in need of a record-number of donations to keep its shelves stocked to feed those in need.
“Now more than ever, we need to have the Food for Families drive,” Raymond Cockrell, the executive director of the Food Care Center, said. “We just distributed 3 million pounds of groceries to 149,000 people. All time records in 37-year history.”
The pantry served more than 30,000 active duty military families and 4,500 veterans.
There have been changes with the supplier that distributes to Food Care Center and several other food pantries across Central Texas. The change has resulted in less nonperishable food items delivered to pantries. That’s why Cockrell said the one-day food drive is incredibly important to keeping the shelves stocked this year.
Food Care Center relies on Food for Families to stock its shelves for months.
“It’s vitally important to us,” he said. “First of all, just the groceries and the money that we bring in, it represents a third of our annual revenue. But it’s vitally important to get our community involved in what we do and help them understand they truly are partners in feeding those in need in our community.”
KWTX crews will be set up at 19 locations across Central Texas Nov. 22, where people can donate food or money. All donated food serves the people in the county where it is collected.
