Food for Families: Riesel food pantry hopes to restock empty shelves with Food for Families donations

RIESEL, Texas (KWTX) - Five Loaves and 2 Fish Food Pantry is a new drop-off location in Riesel for Food for Families this year, and the pantry is hoping to restock its empty shelves to serve hundreds for the holiday season.

Five Loaves and 2 Fish Food Pantry is located behind the Cornerstone Fellowship Church off Highway 6 in Riesel. Pastor of the church, Cyd Collins, said the pantry serves more than 300 families every month.

“We have to buy a lot of the food that we give to families,” she said. “Last food pantry, we emptied out our pantry, and so our shelves are bare.”

Food for Families is the largest one-day food drive in the state. KWTX crews and food pantries are set up at 19 locations across Central Texas to collect donations. Donations at those locations stay with that pantry.

“We’re so excited to be part of Food for Family this year because I think the first year I came here, the school was participating in it, but the food went to another pantry, but they raised 27,000 pounds that year,” Collins said. “Our goal, we’re starting small. It’s 10,000, but I really feel like we’re going to exceed that with donations and monetary and canned goods and dry goods.”

Five Loaves and 2 Fish Food Pantry opened in 2015 out of the Cornerstone Fellowship Church, and, within a year, several churches in Riesel helped support the pantry financially and physically.

“It is truly a community effort,” she said. “We couldn’t ask for anything else. It’s just awesome.”

Now, the pantry is hoping to see the community donate on Friday. Collins said she has already seen the community get excited about the event. Local daycares are doing challenges to raise the most donations.

Food for Families is Nov. 22. People can donate nonperishable food or money at any of the locations listed below, and all donated food serves the people in the county where it is collected.
